The square knot is also known as joining knot because it
can join two ropes together and because it is the first
knot Scouts learn when they join the BSA. It is never to
be used for human or critical loads - it may spill into two
half hitches and then slip. It can also bind, and be hard
to undo, or worse it is frequently tied wrongly as a
"Granny Knot".
