Troop 50 History
Troop 50 was founded by Willard Johnson in 1960 and has operated continuously since that time.
The Troop is chartered under the United Methodist Men's Group at Arborlawn United Methodist Church. We meet in room S-19 in the SAM Building at Arborlawn United Methodist Church, 4917 Briarhaven Rd. The troop has been as large as 122 registered scouts. The 2018 charter includes 51 scouts and 41 adults.
Troop 50 subscribes to the tenets of the Boy Scouting Program as described by Lord Baden-Powell. His program emphasizes learning, advancement, and leadership through outdoor programs of camping and physical activity, which are planned and implemented by the scout leadership of the troop, with the adults serving in the roles of advisers and counselors. This program aims to teach good citizenship and self-reliance through the principles of duty to God and country, others, and self, as stated in the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
Troop 50 has an active and ambitious schedule. Highlights of the camping schedule may include: a family camp or family picnic in the early spring, a canoe trip in May, a week of Summer Camp at Worth Ranch, backpacking at Lake Texoma, tower climbing at Sid Richardson, and archery, shotgun, or rifle shooting at Worth Ranch, along with a fall backpacking trip. Other annual events of the troop include 4 Courts of Honor in February, May, August, and November, and a single fundraising event, the very popular Troop 50 Chili Supper in November. In addition to these events, Troop 50 has been fortunate enough to backpack every other year in the high Rockies at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
During Troop 50's 6 decade tenure, it has had the privilege of having over 150 young men reach the rank of Eagle Scout.
Troop 50 meets every Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 at the SAM Building in room S-19, 4917 Briarhaven Rd. We are a "Boy Led" troop with the "Patrol Method" used to carry out the Troop program.
Troop elections are held in the Spring and Fall. Elected from the Troop at large are the Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe, and Quartermaster. Patrol Leaders are elected from their patrols. All Troop leaders are required to attend Troop 50's LIFE LONG LEADERSHIP Course, a leadership course that is unique to Troop 50.
Troop 50 has a strong adult leadership, with many of our former Eagle Scouts now serving as Assistant Scoutmasters. If you are interested in visiting our Troop, come by any Tuesday night for a visit.
